Friends vs groups — which do I use?
Same maths, different container. Groups are for anything ongoing; friends are for everything else.
Just a friend
Add a friend, add an expense between the two of you, done. No group to create, no name to think of. Every expense you share with that person rolls into one running balance.
To add someone: Friends → Add friend. You can search by the exact email they signed up with, or pull from your phone contacts. They need a PaySlice account — an expense can't be split with someone who isn't on the app.
⭐Contacts are optional
Syncing contacts only ever checks which of them already use PaySlice. We don't store your address book and never contact anyone in it. Decline the permission and you can still add anyone by typing their email.
A group
A group is worth creating the moment more than two people are involved more than once — a trip, a flat, a recurring dinner crew.
- Everyone in the group sees every group expense.
- The group has a default currency, so you're not re-picking it for every taxi.
- You get one place to look at the whole trip instead of five separate friend balances.
- Groups are identified by an emoji you pick — no photo to upload.
💡You can mix them
A group expense and a one-off expense with the same friend both count toward what that person owes you overall. Nothing is trapped inside a group.
